The Vinalopo Valleys is a varied area in the centre of the Vinalopo’s rather timid journey to the Mediterranean
Sea. The Eastern part, following the A31 Madrid motorway is a busy corridor of development, commerce and light industry. The area, whilst not attractive, is the economic heartbeat of much of
the southern part of the Alicante province.
Only a few minutes either side of the motorway and the area changes completely. From the dramatic
mountains and valleys to the north, to the lovely peaceful vineyards toward Monovar and Pinoso, this area is all contrasts.
There is a strong English language community around Monovar, La Romana and Pinoso, and to a lesser extent
around Elda and Petrer. These latter two towns are joined together and form quite a large urban area which has a major hospital, hypermarkets and multiplex cinema screens.
There are four golf courses planned for this region, though it is unlikely that all will go ahead.
In addition, a new high speed railway line is currently under construction which approximately follows the route of the A31 motorway into Alicante city.
