The Upper Vinalopo region, being a little further inland than the Vinalopo Valleys, is a little quieter and
more rural in nature.
The landscape around Sax in the south is quite arid, with dusty soil supporting olives, and overshadowed by jagged mountains. As one moves north, to Villena, it becomes greener and the hills more gentle - the area around Caudete being an important area for vegetable crops and bottled mineral water.
Moving east toward Biar, and the landscape changes again, becoming more like neighbouring Alcoy, heavily wooded
hillsides and relatively lush green olive and almond groves, the area being well watered by underground streams from the mountains to the north.
There are strong English language communities around Sax, Villena, Caudete and Biar, and to a lesser extent in
Salinas. The area close to Benejama, Caņada and beyond is still reasonably virgin territory for the anglophone.
There is a planned golf course close to Salinas, and the new high speed railway line is being constructed which
approximately follows the A31 motorway line..
