Petrer used to be four kilometres from
Elda at the beginning of the century, but their industrial and population explosion have brought the town towns together, so that today they are known as the Elda -
Petrer conurbation. There is one street where one side belongs to one town and the other to the other. The conurbation has a population of 85,000, making it the fifth
largest town in the Valencian Community.
Petrerīs Roman and Muslim origins are located in the castle. This was rebuilt and is one of the prettiest in the province. The castle and the town
were part of the Courtship of Concentaina and were repopulated by Valencian-speakers after the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, making this one of the most important cultural events. It is an
industrial town dedicated to the shoe and leather goods industries.
