In the middle ages the
Christians lived on the neighbouring summit of La Mola, and the Muslims in the present flat settlement next to the Vinalopó. After the expulsion of the Moors, when the fortress lost its military
role, the settlement on La Mola was abandoned in favour of the definitive location of the present Novelda.
It is a proverbially hard-working town with commercial
imagination. Its position in the middle of the Vinalopó corridor has facilitated its development as an industrial, exporting town.
The principal economic activities are focused on the production of
the marble taken from quarries in the district, spices such as saffron and bagged grapes: for this the technique of bagging, invented to delay harvesting until winter, the Vinalopó had to be channelled.
