The sea has always been
associated with El Campello, Iberian and Greek remains like the Temple to the SEa God and the Temple to the Goddess of Fecundity have been found in the part of the town known as Lilleta.
In the same area a watchtower was built in 1554 to protect the coastfrom Arab attacks. Today it is the towns´symbol. In the 18th century Prince Pio of Savoy built
the shipyards which finally gave the definitive edge that would make Campello independant of Alicante at the beginning of this centruy.
The town is situated two kilometres from the coast on a small hill. On the coast around the Carrer del Mar is what in olden times was the fishermens´quarter and is now the most touristy area.
Traditionally Campellos´economy was based on fishing and unirrigated farming. These days, tourism is the main source os income. The cultural centre and sports centre, with a covered
pavillion, are worth mentioning.
Campello has 23lm of coastline with beaches of all types, from the much frequented Muchavista ajoining the San Juan beach to the
rocky creeks of la Cova del Llop Mari and la Cala del Morro Blanc. Nudism is allowed in the stony cove of la Lloma de Reixes.
