Back in Roman times Crevillente was
called Campus Spartarius. Esparto has always been key to industry here, Esparto matting was exported, as the geographer Cavanilles noted in 1797, and the French
called it ´le tapsis dÉspagne´. When there was a crisis in esparto production in the last century, the people of Crevillente had to adapt and make other products. The
carpet and tapestry industries arose as a result.
Crevillente has always been an important town and even in Muslim times it was independently governed.
The district covers much of the Sierra of Crevillente (where a bearded bandit called Jaume roamed in the last century, until he was finally brought to justice in Murcia) and part of the Hondo Reservoir.
