Cañada was originally
colonised by the citizens of the nearby town of Biar and, like that town, was on the frontier of the Kingdom of Aragón. The elongated town of white houses skirts the hill on which the
Sanctuary of the Virgen del Carmen is built, where a pilgrimage is held in the month of July. The church houses a painting by Sorolla. The most important fiesta in the Auto de los
Reyes Magos y Belen Viviente (Epiphany play) in which the whole town takes part, which has been celebrated since 1764. The performance although emphatic and rhetorical in style exudes
pathos in the second part and moments of humour at various points, and is followed by a crowd of spectators.
