The Guide: Aspe

The Basics:

Population

18,500

Location

The Hondon Valley

Altitude

241m

The Location:

Aspe is situated on the River Tarafa, and sits at the head of the Hondon Valley.  It is close to the lovely city of Elche and the town of Novelda.

It is set in a valley and well served by roads to Elche, Novelda, La Romana and Crevillente.

It is about 25 minutes to Alicante Airport and the beaches, and about 50 minutes to Murcia’s San Javier Airport.

The Facilities:

Aspe has a good market, parks, shops, restaurants and facilities such as pharmacies, a medical centre and Spanish schools. It is close to bilingual schools at Elche or Monforte del Cid.

Much of the town is now pedestrianised and it is pleasant to walk through the old streets lined with traditional shops and town houses.

There is also a museum, some sports and social facilities, a lively fiesta calendar and an active English speaking community.

The Description:

A pretty little town, superbly located and with good facilities, Aspe is a popular choice for many expats looking to move to the region.

The town was captured in 1296 by King Jaime II of Aragon and repopulated by people of that region.

When you approach Aspe one of the first things you notice are the grape vines with bagged grapes.  These are bagged in October and remain on the vine to be eaten by households all over Spain on New Year´s Eve.
