The capital of the Alicante province and the second largest city in the Valencian Community, Alicante is a
lively place with a thriving economy. It is a working port, an important shopping hub and a tourist destination, as well as being the centre for most commerical business for the region.
To the north, along the coast, the tasteful towns of San Juan and El Campello are pleasant and quiet coastal
resorts with excellent facilities. To the south, most of the beaches are protected and there is little development.
Inland from Alicante city, the countryside is not far away - there are a couple of industrialised corners and
big towns like San Vicente, but the drive to Jijona and towns like Busot and Agost show how things change so quickly in this dramatic country area.
There are a number of projects underway to improve road congestion, including a new bypass motorway connecting
Elche to Mutxamel. There is also the new high speed rail link which will cut the journey time to Madrid to two hours.
There is a new golf course under development at Panorama Golf close to Bonalba Golf.
